Chapter 65

Reggie

I went to the foster home where Mom had lived to say goodbye to her friends. I brought the same muffins I used to bring for our tea parties when Mom was alive. I got to say goodbye to Reggie, Susan, and Jewel.

Reggie and I had a sweet talk about Mom. I told her I thought she was Mom’s last best friend.

When I called before my visit, Sue told me that she had moved Reggie’s things to Mom’s old room. It was good to be prepared for that. It was probably better than seeing Mom’s room empty.

The starkness of Reggie’s room was a shock to me. Leslie had done such a wonderful job of making Mom’s room warm, homey, and colorful. It made me sad that Reggie didn’t have family to make her a pretty room.

Reggie showed me her fingernails, which Sue’s daughter had painted green and glittery in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Reggie said her daughter had painted them for her and that she was in Arkansas or Oklahoma. I wondered if that was true because Reggie didn’t have any contact with her family.

She was confused, and so was I.

Reggie asked me to come back and visit, but all I wanted to do at that moment was run.
